Modern waterfront home and top rentals on the San Juan Islands

Modern waterfront home and top rentals on the San Juan Islands

In early 2017 a Seattle couple approaching retirement began scouting the San Juan Islands for a weekend hideaway that could later become their permanent nest. With a loyal Weimaraner named Storm and grown sons who visited often, they imagined a low-maintenance, one-story sanctuary perched on a water-front lot, where large glass panes would frame the bay and every bedroom would enjoy a view.

After a year of touring existing cottages without finding the right match, they stumbled upon a three-quarter-acre, undeveloped parcel on the western shore of San Juan Island. The site offered direct beach access, mature madrona trees, and sweeping water vistas, but also presented challenges such as strong winds and close neighboring lots. To truly feel the place, the couple parked an RV on the property for a few weekends, gauging sun angles, sea breezes, and the practicalities of daily life before committing to a build.

A single-level waterfront residence

They enlisted the firm now known as Prentiss + Balance + Wickline whose portfolio of island homes resonated with the couple’s aesthetic. The architects responded to the sloping terrain by situating a garage at the highest point, then sinking a U-shaped, 1,705-square-foot house down the slope toward the water. Movable glass walls on the north and south façades dissolve the boundary between interior and deck, while opaque panels protect privacy on the east and west sides. Light-colored cedar siding, oak cabinets, and a custom wood-burning stove balance the industrial steel roof, which folds down on the sides for extra shelter and privacy.

The interior follows an open-concept plan: a kitchen that gazes onto the backyard, a dining area that flows onto a cantilevered deck framing the madrona, and a living space warmed by the stove. The primary suite features a private deck with an outdoor shower, and two additional bedrooms share a bathroom, one of which includes bunk beds for visiting grandchildren. Polished concrete floors run throughout, unifying the modern palette while standing up to the coastal climate.

Seasonal living was a design priority. In summer, the sliding doors open fully, allowing breezes and wildlife—seals, eagles, even occasional orcas—to drift into view. Winter brings brisk winds and choppy waters, yet the sealed envelope, standing-seam metal roof, and insulated cedar interior keep the interior snug, letting the owners enjoy a fire in the stove while watching the storm from their bay-side windows.
