Karnataka Launches Door-to-Door Verification for Free Power Scheme

Karnataka's Energy Department has launched a statewide verification drive to ensure the authenticity of Gruha Jyothi beneficiaries, a scheme providing free electricity to eligible households.

Karnataka Launches Door-to-Door Verification for Free Power Scheme

The Karnataka Energy Department has embarked on a comprehensive door-to-door verification process for beneficiaries of the Gruha Jyothi scheme, starting from July 1, 2026. This initiative aims to verify the authenticity of beneficiaries and prevent any misuse of the program, which offers free electricity to households consuming less than 200 units per month.

The verification drive involves ESCOM staff visiting beneficiaries’ homes to check records and collect necessary information. This process is crucial to maintain the integrity of the scheme, which was launched in July 2026 as one of the state’s flagship welfare programs.

Verification Process and Required Documents

During the verification process, beneficiaries are required to present several documents to confirm their eligibility. These include an Aadhaar card for identity verification, a passport-sized photograph, voter ID cardPAN cardration cardcaste certificate and tenancy or rental agreements where applicable. The verification is conducted using a mobile application and a declaration form signed by the beneficiary.

The Energy Department has emphasized the importance of this exercise, stating that it is the only way to ensure the scheme is not misused. Beneficiaries are urged to cooperate with the ESCOM staff to facilitate a smooth and timely completion of the verification process.

Addressing Misuse and Ensuring Eligibility

Recent concerns have been raised about the misuse of the Gruha Jyothi scheme, with instances of commercial establishments and ineligible beneficiaries availing themselves of the subsidy. Chief Minister D K Shivakumar highlighted the need for reverification to address these issues and ensure that only eligible households continue to receive the benefits.

The verification drive is being carried out across all five Electricity Supply Companies (ESCOMs) in Karnataka, including BESCOM (Bengaluru), MESCOM (Mangaluru), HESCOM (Hubballi), GESCOM (Kalaburagi), and CESC (Mysuru). This statewide effort is expected to help the government identify genuine beneficiaries and prevent subsidy leakages.

Impact and Future of the Gruha Jyothi Scheme

The Gruha Jyothi scheme has significantly benefited over 1.74 crore households since its inception. The Karnataka government has allocated substantial funds for the scheme, spending Rs 28,000 crore up to the 2026–26 financial year and earmarking Rs 10,578 crore for its implementation in 2026–27. The verification drive is a proactive step to ensure the continued success and integrity of this vital welfare program.

As the verification process unfolds, it is essential for beneficiaries to understand the importance of this exercise and cooperate fully with the visiting officials. This collaborative effort will help maintain the scheme’s effectiveness and ensure that the benefits reach those who truly need them.
