Designing your dream space: where to start
Embarking on an interior design project can feel overwhelming, especially when you’re faced with a blank slate. Whether it’s your floor plan or a Pinterest board filled with inspiration, the initial stages often leave you feeling adrift. Hiring a professional designer can be an effective way to solidify your vision, but the cost can be prohibitive for many. Fortunately, there’s an alternative that can provide valuable guidance without straining your wallet.
Many high-end home retailers, like Article and Lulu and Georgia, offer complimentary design services. These in-house professionals can help translate your style preferences into a cohesive design plan, including layout and sizing tailored just for you. While these services are often aimed at promoting their products, they can be a fantastic starting point for anyone looking to craft a specific aesthetic without breaking the bank.
Our experience with free design services
As design enthusiasts, we wanted to put these complimentary services to the test. Janae McKenzie, our Associate Shopping Editor, and contributor Margaux Lushing evaluated four popular brands known for their design offerings. We assessed their services based on speed, communication, budget compliance, and how well they aligned with our creative visions. Below, we share insights on which services stood out the most.
Article’s comprehensive design service
Article was the first on Lushing’s list to explore. They provide a Full Design Project service, which Lushing utilized for designing an outdoor bar area. The journey began with an email detailing her style preferences, images, and measurements. Soon after, she was connected with a designer who arranged a 30-minute Zoom consultation. Prior to the call, the designer shared mood boards to facilitate discussion.
Post-meeting, Lushing received a detailed design plan in a presentation format. This included an inspiration slide, product recommendations, alternatives, and a quote for the suggested items. Lushing remarked, “The delivered deck was the most comprehensive in terms of design recommendations compared to other services I tried.” Despite a hiccup with pillow sizing, the rest of her selections fit perfectly within her vision.
Maiden Home’s tailored approach
In her quest for a versatile and cat-friendly sofa, Lushing turned to Maiden Home, known for their focus on investment pieces. Their process began with a request for visuals and a floor plan, and within a week, Lushing received a well-crafted design proposal via email. This plan included scaled drawings, material suggestions, and additional furniture ideas, all accompanied by pricing details.
Lushing appreciated the exceptional communication throughout the process. As she navigated her options, the design team was always available for consultation. “The unlimited back-and-forth over email or phone was invaluable as I worked to finalize measurements for my space,” she noted. Ultimately, she purchased a sofa that fit seamlessly into her home, though she found the limited selection of styles somewhat restrictive.
Revamping a bathroom with Lulu and Georgia
When McKenzie aimed to refresh her drab, landlord-decorated bathroom, she sought to create an airy, serene environment. After filling out a detailed design form, she had a brief discussion with a designer from Lulu and Georgia. This conversation was instrumental in clarifying her vision for a spa-like space.
McKenzie said, “The designer was incredibly thorough, considering my preferences for renter-friendly wallpaper and storage solutions.” Despite the budget being set between $1,000 and $2,500, the designer successfully crafted a plan that remained under the $1,000 mark. Following their call, the designer created a mood board and maintained communication via text, allowing for adjustments and fine-tuning throughout the process. “The entire experience took just 24 hours, and I felt supported every step of the way,” McKenzie added.
Serena & Lily’s stylish recommendations
Lushing also explored Serena & Lily’s complimentary design service while revitalizing her covered outdoor entryway. The process initiated with a digital form that gathered her style preferences and images. After some initial scheduling adjustments, she met with a local designer via Zoom.
Within a week, the designer provided Lushing with a stunning mood board that captured her desired coastal aesthetic with a mid-century modern twist. Following a follow-up meeting to fine-tune details, the designer combined furniture and decor into an executable floor plan. “With a little patience, the styling recommendations helped me visualize how to elevate a space I found quite challenging to tackle alone,” Lushing reflected.
Final thoughts on complimentary design services
The emergence of complimentary design services from leading home retailers offers a valuable resource for those looking to enhance their living spaces without the hefty price tag of professional design consultations. These services not only provide expert advice but also allow you to explore your style preferences in a structured way. Whether you’re dreaming of a serene bathroom or a chic outdoor space, these retailers have you covered, empowering you to bring your vision to life.
