Home-related favors often elicit a groan or two—who wants to help a friend move furniture, right? But what if you could turn that chore into a memorable evening filled with laughter and friendship? I recently faced this dilemma after purchasing a custom area rug that I was determined to place under my bed and dresser. Instead of making a straightforward request, I decided to throw an interior decorating party, turning a daunting task into a delightful gathering.
Gathering friends on short notice
Coordinating schedules in your late 20s can feel like herding cats, especially when you’re aiming for a get-together within a month. However, I managed to snag two enthusiastic friends, Claire and Jocelynne, for a Thursday evening adventure. Naturally, a gathering wouldn’t be complete without snacks. I stocked up on a variety of treats including cheeses, crackers, nuts, popcorn, and chocolate-covered pretzels. And, of course, we had to whip up some refreshing Aperol spritzes to set the mood.
As we munched on goodies, the atmosphere was relaxed and fun. We caught up on life’s latest happenings, but soon enough, we turned our attention to the task at hand: placing my new rug and rug pad under my furniture. It seemed straightforward, right? After all, I had successfully tackled assembling a desk and hanging wallpaper solo, so how hard could this be? Well, that’s where the challenge began.
Creative problem-solving in a tight space
In a small room, maneuvering a queen-sized bed can be quite the challenge. Moving it was off the table, so lifting it was our only option. To make things more complicated, the bed frame’s support legs were not attached, meaning we had to lift the frame and the legs simultaneously. On top of that, the rug was a hefty 9 feet by 8 inches by 7 feet by 10 inches—definitely not a lightweight!
But with teamwork and some clever thinking, we managed to figure it out. One major takeaway from this experience was how willing everyone was to help, even if some couldn’t make it on the date I had in mind. Jocelynne cheerfully declared she was in “with no bribes,” which perfectly captured the spirit of our little gathering.
The joy of collaboration
It’s amazing how much a task can improve with good company. When faced with projects that seem overwhelming, turning them into social events can work wonders. Snacks and drinks can help keep spirits high, especially during those long days of moving or organizing—because let’s be honest, nobody enjoys a hangry friend.
As much as I contemplated handling the rug installation solo, I realized that it would likely result in chaos, with the rug sprawled across my room for days until help arrived. Asking for help can be tough, but it’s often necessary. Having Claire and Jocelynne by my side not only made the process easier but also more enjoyable.
Expertise and teamwork
Coincidentally, Claire had previously unwrapped and placed several Ernesta rugs at her family’s home, giving her the expertise we needed. She knew exactly how to handle the packaging without causing damage. Her attention to detail matched my own, and together we aimed to ensure the rug was positioned perfectly.
Meanwhile, Jocelynne proved to be an invaluable problem solver. She suggested rolling the rug and rug pad under the bed while we lifted the frame. As we maneuvered my dresser back onto the rug, she realized we could lighten the load by removing the drawers—an idea that had totally slipped my mind! I was too preoccupied with the fact that the drawers were child-locked, allowing us to open only one at a time.
Embracing change and reflecting on progress
Before this adventure, I had an 8-foot by 5-foot rug under my bed. After consulting with a design expert at Ernesta about finding a better fit, I was thrilled with the results. The larger rug not only transformed the space but also felt like a breath of fresh air. I swapped out a trendy black-and-white marble pattern for a gorgeous ivory, hand-knotted shag rug made entirely of wool—a serious upgrade!
Stepping back to admire the final look was incredibly satisfying. Sharing that moment with the friends who helped make it happen? Even better! Claire’s question about what design change to tackle next made me smile. If another project comes up, I know exactly who to call.
