Exploring my sewing area setup
My current sewing room functions as a multi-purpose area: it serves as a sewing space, an office, and a creative zone for my children’s art projects. While I have focused on the sewing aspect in my images, the multifunctional nature of the room helps maintain organization.
At the heart of my workspace is a spacious desk that accommodates my sewing machine, serger, and coverstitch machine. Above the desk, shelves display a vibrant array of threads, allowing for easy access and inspiration. I opted for the double-width Linnmon desk paired with Alex drawers on either side, which has revolutionized my workflow. The transition from a desk without storage to this setup has greatly improved my efficiency.
Thread organization and accessibility
One standout feature of my sewing area is a thread rack, which neatly displays all my threads. I have organized my machines and lighting on a single surge protector for convenience, allowing me to power everything on with a single switch. Previously, I utilized a magnetic knife rack from IKEA to keep my metal bobbins organized, which proved to be quite practical.
In prior setups, I relied on a Kallax unit for storing papers, tripods, and ongoing projects, which was beneficial due to its proximity to my sewing desk. The drawers housed buttons, ribbons, and various notions, ensuring I could access essential materials with ease.
Functional storage solutions
Another magnetic knife rack is mounted above my machines, providing a designated spot for scissors and other metallic tools. While I could easily store these in a drawer, I prefer to keep them visible and out of reach of small children. I also keep my pins, clips, and clothing tags on this rack, along with a bulletin board for threaded hand needles.
My affection for decorative items is evident in my workspace, which includes felt balls stored in a clear jar alongside pens. A small wooden sewing figure, a thoughtful gift from my grandfather, adds a personal touch to the environment.
Cutting and ironing stations
Behind my sewing desk, I have established a versatile cutting table that also serves as a filming space. I place my portable DIY cutting mat on top of a large Linnmon tabletop supported by two Kallax units. This setup is slightly taller than my sewing desk, making fabric cutting more ergonomic while providing additional storage.
Without a closet in my room, I utilize the two Kallax units to store fabric scraps, felt, and patterns. I maintain my paper patterns in their original envelopes and organize my PDF patterns in large white envelopes for easy identification.
