Redecorating a living room can be challenging, especially when balancing aesthetics and functionality. A common issue is organizing clutter while maintaining style. Many face a dilemma with toys scattered around and books that do not fit traditional shelves. To address this, I created a customized bookcase that resolved my organizational issues and served as a beautiful focal point.
After conducting online research, I chose the Vittsjo bookcase from Ikea, priced at $79. This sleek design features a black metal frame and clear glass shelves, adding a modern touch. However, I envisioned a different aesthetic that better matched my decor, specifically a luxurious gold frame and marble-style glass.
The facts
To achieve the desired look, I began with the glass shelves. Clear glass can detract from the overall appeal, especially if it shows fingerprints and dust. I decided to cover the shelves with marble contact paper, costing approximately $12 for two rolls. This provided a chic marble finish while hiding smudges. I found it easiest to position the glass shelf on my sofa, peel back the backing paper, and smooth it out with a squeegee to minimize air bubbles. After trimming the excess, both sides of the glass were transformed.
Applying the gold finish
The next step involved the frame of the bookcase. I used Rub ‘n Buff, a product I found on Amazon for about $7 per bottle. I required three bottles to cover the entire frame. An alternative could be gold spray paint, which is typically simpler. However, due to cold weather, I opted for the Rub ‘n Buff method. I applied a small amount with my finger, rubbing it in for a burnished finish. While time-consuming, the results were worth it.
Reactions
Once the bookcase was complete, I was pleased with the transformation. It became a stunning centerpiece in my living room, organized and visually appealing. To keep my son’s toys neatly tucked away yet accessible, I utilized Kuggis plastic bins from Ikea, which are both affordable and practical. The toys were hidden from sight but easy for him to reach.
In addition to the bookcase, I added festive decor for the holiday season. I decorated the shelves with a cherished Christmas village I crafted on a budget years ago. The top shelf features a vintage Nativity set, safely positioned out of reach from my toddler. I also included a whimsical garland reading “Let it Snow,” enhancing the festive vibe of the room.
Creating a cozy atmosphere
As I admired my new bookcase, I decided to incorporate additional decor elements to enhance the cozy atmosphere. I hung pink paper star lanterns around the living room, adding a playful and warm touch. The combination of the marble shelves and vibrant decor made the room feel inviting.
After moving to a new home, I relocated the bookcase, and it continues to bring me joy. A simple DIY project can significantly impact the overall feel of a living space. Whether looking to organize or add a stylish touch, creating your own bookcase can be a rewarding endeavor.
