Jeep is embarking on a significant transformation of its European lineup, with plans to introduce three new SUV models by 2030. This strategic shift aims to capitalize on the growing demand for SUVs in the region while addressing regulatory challenges and market dynamics.
The American automaker is focusing on models that cater to critical European volume segments, leveraging partnerships and advanced technologies to stay competitive. However, this expansion comes at a cost, with some models being axed from the UK product plan.
New Models and Market Strategy
Jeep’s new European-centric product plan includes a supermini-sized SUV a Jeep Renegade replacement and a family-sized model. These models are designed to appeal to a broad range of customers, from urban dwellers to families, and will be offered with a variety of powertrain options, including hybrid and electric versions.
The most ambitious of these new models is a compact B-segment SUV set to arrive in 2028 or 2029. This model will be built on the advanced STLA-One architecture sharing its basis with other Stellantis conglomerate cars. It will offer a flexible range of powertrains, including hybrid, plug-in hybrid, and full-EV options, along with advanced features like steer-by-wire technology.
The Future of the Jeep Renegade
The reborn Jeep Renegade is expected to hit the market in 2027. This model will feature boxy, upright styling and space for five passengers. It will be positioned as a more affordable and spacious option, appealing to customers looking for value-focused rivals such as the Vauxhall Frontera and various Chinese SUVs like the Jaecoo 7 and BYD Seal U.
A Rugged Family-Sized SUV
The final piece of Jeep’s plan is a rugged, family-sized SUV developed in collaboration with Dongfeng. This model aims to rival the Land Rover Defender combining Jeep’s off-road capability with European-friendly hybrid and electric powertrains. The partnership with Dongfeng will leverage Chinese manufacturing and engineering capacities to deliver the production car quickly, possibly by late 2027.
Strategic Shifts and Market Dynamics
Jeep’s strategic shift includes the removal of the Wrangler from the UK market due to incompatibility with European emissions and safety regulations. The brand is confident that its new, more Euro-friendly models will compensate for this loss by offering Jeep’s iconic Americana image in cars better suited to European customers.
The Jeep Recon and Wagoneer S initially planned for the European market, have been pulled from the UK product plan. This decision was influenced by difficult market conditions and European regulations, as well as the competitive landscape where these models faced stiff competition from more sophisticated European rivals.
Despite these challenges, Jeep remains optimistic about its future in Europe. The brand is committed to delivering innovative models that cater to the diverse needs of European customers, leveraging strategic partnerships and advanced technologies to stay ahead in the competitive SUV market.
