When a Toronto family reached out to local interior designer Ali Budd to breathe new life into their five-bedroom home, they essentially handed her a blank canvas. Budd quickly recognized that the house was in dire need of a makeover. This fun element, while exciting, also posed a substantial design challenge. Budd admitted, “The scale of the room combined with the vibrant range was daunting. A misstep could easily result in a whimsical yet impractical space reminiscent of a Barbie Dreamhouse.” To balance the range’s bold hue, Budd thoughtfully mixed finishes like antique brass, limewash, wood, marble, and emerald quartzite. This meticulous design strategy paid off, as the pink became a recurring theme throughout the home. In the living room, a rich mauve envelops the space, creating a moody yet intimate atmosphere. The clients also envisioned a playful powder room, which Budd brought to life with a pink quartzite vanity and a pale rose ceiling, harmonizing beautifully with an ethereal wall covering. Even the primary bedroom, with its warm and neutral palette, subtly incorporates this signature hue, ensuring the space feels both calming and vibrant. Creating Cohesion Through Design
In the en suite bath, the soft pink tones continue through the trim, vanity, and shower floor, showcasing Budd’s dedication to cohesion throughout the design. She remarked, “Each detail is intentionally repeated across the spaces to forge a sense of unity.” The completed interior goes beyond mere visual continuity; it’s a celebration of the interplay of texture and color. Among the standout features is a custom banquette designed by Budd, crafted from Holly Hunt fabric and integrated into a stunning 13-foot green quartzite island. In the primary bedroom, tranquility reigns with walls and ceilings adorned in San Marco Marmorino Classico Venetian plaster, all painted in Sherwin-Williams Toque White. This serene environment is complemented by a dressing table featuring a floor-to-ceiling mirror that reflects light and creates an illusion of spaciousness, along with spa-inspired amenities like a sauna. Budd’s thoughtful incorporation of arches throughout the foyer serves to soften modern edges, while an abstract plaster installation on the staircase adds a contemporary flair. Before launching her own design firm in 2010, Budd earned a BA from Huron College at Western University and later received her interior design degree from The International Academy of Design in Toronto.
