On October 22, Household Goods of Acton marked a significant milestone: 35 years of providing essential furnishings to individuals and families in need. This achievement was celebrated with an Oktoberfest-themed gathering at their headquarters at 530 Main Street. The event attracted over 200 attendees, including dedicated volunteers, staff members, and generous donors, who were acknowledged for their invaluable contributions to the nonprofit’s mission.
The celebration included a range of activities such as live jazz music performed by the Dave Fox Trio, an engaging auction, and a variety of food options. Guests enjoyed an assortment of finger foods and complimentary beverages, including craft beer donated by Rapscallion Table & Tap and samples of fine German wines.
From humble beginnings to a flourishing organization
The story of Household Goods began in 1990 when Ira and Barb Smith, residents of Acton, initiated a simple act of kindness. They started collecting essential household items for a Salvadoran refugee family. Their efforts soon revealed that many others in their community were struggling to furnish their empty homes and apartments, prompting them to seek further donations from nearby communities.
What started as a modest collection effort in a church basement has transformed into a large-scale operation occupying 28,000 square feet of storage and operational space. Over its 35-year history, Household Goods has furnished approximately 60,000 homes, providing over a million items to those in need. In the last year alone, the organization assisted 3,100 households, helping individuals transition from homelessness or difficult situations into spaces that feel like home.
The importance of a furnished home
Sharon Martens, Executive Director of Household Goods, emphasized that finding affordable housing is only part of the challenge for those moving from shelters or unstable living conditions. “Many people are surprised to learn that most housing comes without furniture,” she explained. “A house devoid of furnishings does not truly become a home.”
Today, Household Goods serves a diverse range of individuals, including the homeless, survivors of domestic violence, immigrants, veterans, and those affected by natural disasters. With referrals from social service agencies such as shelters, hospitals, and schools, eligible recipients can visit the Household Goods showroom to select items free of charge.
Community support and future fundraising efforts
During the anniversary event, Sylvia Kelly, Housing Stabilization Advocate for the City of Cambridge, underscored the profound impact Household Goods has on the community. She praised the organization’s grassroots origins and highlighted the dedication of their team of 1,600 volunteers. “The Board of Directors, staff, and volunteers are truly exceptional,” she noted. “Their commitment ensures that we help individuals at whatever stage they are in life, free from judgment.”
To expand their reach and continue providing free furnishings to those in need, Household Goods has launched a new fundraising initiative called the “Furnish the Future” campaign. This ambitious campaign aims to raise $1 million over three years. The kickoff event featured a live auction where guests raised funds by bidding on specific donation amounts, alongside a silent auction showcasing 15 themed baskets donated by local businesses and residents. The evening’s fundraising efforts exceeded the Board of Directors’ pledged match of $70,000.
