Designing a beautiful and functional cottage getaway

Learn how a designer transformed a new-build cottage into a cozy haven that balances aesthetics with usability.

Just a few hours north of Toronto, you’ll find the enchanting region known as “cottage country,” particularly the picturesque Kawartha Lakes municipality in Ontario, Canada. This stunning spot has become a weekend getaway for city folks eager to escape into nature’s embrace. Here, designer Allison Willson faced an intriguing challenge: how to craft a beautiful yet practical cottage retreat that invites relaxation, all while keeping in mind the playful energy of a family with kids.

Crafting a Cozy Environment

The answer? A harmonious blend of neutral tones and durable, natural materials. Over 15 months, Willson transformed this nine-bedroom, six-bathroom retreat into a serene lakeside haven. She understood that layering textures is key to a cozy atmosphere, ensuring every room featured more than just plain drywall. Think textured wall coverings, charming board-and-batten designs, and even a bunk room with shiplap—each element creating spaces that are not only visually captivating but also resilient. The goal was clear: nothing in this cottage should feel too precious or fragile.

But it wasn’t just about durability. Willson also aimed for a color palette that seamlessly blended with the breathtaking views surrounding the cottage. “We wanted our finishes to not only ground the space but also imbue it with warmth,” she explains. In the kitchen, limestone walls and elegant marble countertops create a beautiful harmony with the pastoral landscape outside. Open white oak shelves enhance the inviting vibe, while wood paneling helps to visually lower the soaring 26-foot ceiling, making the space feel more intimate. The only tweak the clients made to Willson’s design was to add more seating around the kitchen island, resulting in a welcoming area that delighted everyone.

Functionality Meets Aesthetics

The end result? A stunning home that strikes the perfect balance between functionality and beauty, making it ideal for hosting gatherings. “The interiors reflect a lifestyle that emphasizes relaxed living among family and friends,” says Willson. “Each room has its own unique direction, yet the overall ambiance is organic, tonal, and calming—everything you could want from a cottage experience.” This design philosophy flows through every inch of the space, from the thoughtfully curated kitchen to the inviting great room.

Willson cleverly connects the kitchen to the great room by wrapping Indiana limestone around the kitchen area to soften its grandeur. The open shelving gives off a casual vibe, while the custom range hood, finished in plaster, ties in beautifully with the organic finishes throughout the room. Right next to the main kitchen, a hardworking secondary space features its own fridge, sink, and coffee station, keeping the main area clean and minimalistic.

Creating Inviting Spaces for All

As guests step into the cottage, they’re welcomed by a great room that radiates warmth and connection to the stunning natural surroundings. The living area, adorned with south-facing windows, features a limestone treatment and a neutral color scheme that reflects the peaceful waterfront view, inviting everyone to unwind. The dining room, conveniently located next to an outdoor living area, is perfect for al fresco dining, enhancing the cottage’s charm as a gathering spot.

Willson’s thoughtful design extends to the children’s spaces, where cozy atmospheres are achieved through careful color choices and soft materials. Each bunk room, designed to accommodate multiple kids, features a cohesive color palette that promotes relaxation and comfort. For the shared bathroom among the three daughters, the designer cleverly incorporated playful elements alongside practicality, such as a double vanity and ample storage, ensuring it serves the family well for years to come.

Conclusion: A Testament to Family Life

The finished cottage stands as a testament to thoughtful design that prioritizes both beauty and practicality. Willson’s approach reflects a commitment to creating spaces that not only meet the immediate needs of family life but also foster lasting memories. By blending functionality with a serene aesthetic, this cottage retreat truly becomes a place where every detail has been considered, allowing the family to embrace their weekends and holidays in comfort and style.
