In the field of interior design, many spaces are limited to a single function. However, a salon designed by Rydhima Brar defies these constraints. This space is not just for watching television or hosting small gatherings; it serves as a dynamic cultural hub where art, conversation, and play converge. Brar describes the experience of entering this room as transformative: “It has to be an experiential room. You walk in, and it transports you,” she states.
This salon reflects Brar’s personal journey, echoing her travels around the world. “This room is a reflection of my travels—it carries memories from everywhere I’ve been,” she explains. The ceiling showcases photographs from her explorations in India, Italy, and other locations, creating a visual narrative that encourages guests to engage with the storytelling above. Rather than confining art to traditional wall displays, Brar promotes a more immersive experience, allowing images to create an ongoing dialogue overhead.
Dynamic and inviting design elements
The seating arrangement in this salon is as diverse as its purpose. Custom-designed by Lee Industries, the modular furniture features a mix of luxurious fabrics in velvety gold, deep teal, and classic plaid patterns. This eclectic combination gives the sectional a sense of history, reminiscent of a world traveler’s cozy living room that encourages intimate conversations and leisurely evenings. With an inviting low profile, these pieces are ideal for relaxed gatherings where storytelling flows freely.
Layering cultural influences
The salon’s floor is adorned with layered rugs from Fibreworks and Jaipur Living, adding both texture and cultural significance. “Rugs are art for the floor,” Brar asserts. “Layering them changes the shape of the room and expands the perimeter.” This thoughtful layering creates a rich visual landscape, inviting guests to explore the textures beneath their feet.
Walls that tell a story
While color and pattern are prominent in the room’s design, it is the walls that convey a powerful narrative. Brar’s upbringing in a colorful, textured environment has shaped her instinct for combining unexpected elements. The walls are adorned with wallcoverings from Harlequin, Sanderson, and Morris & Co., showcasing a dramatic black-and-white floral design alongside a playful bird motif. A vibrant yellow border frames the edges, reflecting the lush greenery visible through the windows while adding a dramatic flair to the interior. Brar explains that this design approach elicits emotions—joy, excitement, and even nostalgia.
The centerpiece of connection
At the heart of the salon lies a custom-crafted **Carrom** game table from 11 Ravens. Inspired by the traditional South Asian board game, this table represents a blend of nostalgic family memories and contemporary design. Brar emphasizes that the table symbolizes the intent behind this space: to foster genuine connections among people across generations, free from screens or distractions.
A harmonious blend of eras and cultures
Above, the Farfalle chandelier from Visual Comfort & Co. serves as a striking focal point, with its sculptural branches and butterfly motifs glimmering in the ambient light. Brar notes, “It’s about mixing eras and cultures until everything feels like it was always meant to be together.” Visitors often express surprise at how the diverse elements coexist harmoniously, stating, “I’d never think this would work, but somehow it all just does.”
